Background

Danville, Illinois, is a charming community nestled along the Vermilion River, blending natural beauty with rich recreational and cultural attractions. The area features over 15,000 acres of parklands, extensive trails, and a vibrant historic downtown adorned with international murals that draw visitors and residents alike. To support continued growth and modernization, Danville sought a unified software solution to connect departments, streamline workflows, and improve overall efficiency across city operations using Citizenserve government software.

Challenge

During the Citizenserve implementation, Danville’s Code Department encountered a major obstacle: unreliable geographic data from Google Maps, which frequently provided inaccurate addresses and locations in the local area. This created significant inefficiencies for field officers who rely on precise mapping for code enforcement, inspections, and compliance checks—leading to delays, frustration, and reduced operational effectiveness in a region where exact positioning is essential for effective enforcement.

Solution

To address the mapping inaccuracies, we developed a custom integration that replaced Google Maps with highly accurate GIS data tailored to Danville’s geography. This created a reliable, user-friendly map interface within Citizenserve that displays correct building numbers and automatically opens to the user’s current location. The enhanced system ensures field staff can quickly locate properties, improving accuracy and speed even in rural or complex areas.

Outcome

The GIS integration delivered pinpoint location accuracy, resolving previous mapping issues and boosting confidence among code enforcement officers. We also optimized the data entry process by consolidating forms into a single, streamlined page—ideal for field users with limited or intermittent internet access. These enhancements significantly improved efficiency, reliability, and user experience, enabling faster, more effective code compliance and inspections throughout Danville.
