Background
Lawrence, Massachusetts is a vibrant and diverse city with a high concentration of food establishments serving its dense urban population. Like all municipalities in the state, Lawrence is required by the Massachusetts Division of Food Protection to conduct regular inspections of food establishments to ensure public health and safety standards are met.
Challenge
The City needed an efficient, modern solution to track its food establishments, schedule and complete routine inspections, and generate the specific inspection reports required by the state. Manual processes made it difficult to maintain accurate records, ensure timely inspections, and produce consistent, formatted reports for state submission.
Solution
Citizenserve worked with Lawrence to create a dedicated Food Permit type along with a custom Food Establishment Inspection form. Inspectors can now complete the full inspection on their iPad while on-site, capturing all required data directly in the mobile app. Upon completion, the system immediately generates a professionally formatted inspection report ready for state submission, along with any violation tickets if needed. All inspections are automatically linked to the parent Food Permit, providing clear visibility into inspection history and making it simple to identify which establishments are due for their next inspection. Similar custom solutions have also been successfully implemented for Massachusetts 110 Inspections and Model Housing inspections.
Outcome
The new system has streamlined Lawrence’s food safety inspection program from end to end. Inspectors benefit from mobile, paperless workflows that save time in the field and reduce administrative work back at the office. The City now maintains accurate, centralized records of all food establishments and their inspection histories, while easily meeting Massachusetts Division of Food Protection reporting requirements. The linked permit-to-inspection structure improves compliance tracking and helps ensure consistent public health protection across the city.
