Background

Northampton County is a rural community located in northeastern North Carolina. Like many small counties, it serves its citizens with limited staff and resources while managing building permits, licensing, and code inspections across its jurisdiction.

Challenge

The county struggled with an outdated, inefficient process that required citizens to submit permit applications in person. Staff faced difficulties tracking inspection results effectively, leading to delays, reduced transparency, and heavy workloads. With limited personnel, they needed a better way to do more with less.

Solution

After learning about Citizenserve from a neighboring Gates County inspector, Northampton County implemented the Citizenserve platform. The new system allows citizens to submit applications online, gives staff powerful tools to manage workflows, and provides clear digital tracking of all code inspections and results.

Outcome

The implementation has successfully streamlined Northampton County’s permitting and inspection processes. Citizens can now apply from anywhere without visiting county offices, while staff benefit from greater efficiency and transparency. The county is now able to deliver faster service and better tracking with fewer resources, significantly improving operations for both staff and residents.
